Ron Robinson presented “Underwriting Unknown Nanotechnology Risks – It’s NOT the Next Asbestos at the September Reinsurance Association of America Re Claims conference in New York. His paper asked and answered the question: “Why, when and how should insurers/reinsurers attempt to cover this unknown and potentially catastrophic risk?" The answer, he suggests, is found in the drafting of the 1966/1973 CGL policies, a cautionary tale of the thirty year industry wide effort to cover the then unknown risks of products/operations based losses.
